Wait and See

So someone is going to call me today about the Hampton job. Did I mention that I had a different interview for a different job? This one is in a library and back in public service again. It has several things going for it, but it also has several things going against it. I believe the salary will be the deal breaking point for me. I'm not looking to make a piddly little bit more. That is the mistake that people make. Just because I make a pitiful amount right now ($18,000/year), they think I would be happy about any increase in salary (say like to $25,000/year). But that is not the case. I am looking to double my salary or more. I have two bachelor's degrees. I am getting ready to shell out a lot of money for a master's degree. I want to be able to move out on my own. I have a lot of school debt already. I deserve to be comfortable and I will wait for the right opportunity.

Cool Job: Information Resource Officer

Foreign Service Officer is not the only job available with the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service. You can be a Foreign Service Specialist. The following is a job that I hope to apply for in the future since I have an undergraduate degree in international studies, internship experience at the U.S. Department of State, and am pursuing the MLS now.

"Information Resource Officer: IROs provide professional guidance and direction to 170 Information Resource Centers (IRCs) located at U.S. embassies abroad. Through extensive travel within an assigned region, IROs counsel Mission Officials on effective information program resources and services, assess staff needs, carry out regional training programs, demonstrate and promote U.S. electronic information resources, and establish contacts with host country information and library institutions. IROs are a vital part of the Department of State's Office of International Information Programs, the principal international strategic communications service for the foreign affairs community."

Girl, Don't Try that Dress On!

Wisdom says that if you are trying to cut spending, remove yourself from temptation. For example, do not try on clothes just to see what it looks like. You will end up buying it.

Maybe the same can be said for job interviews. I went on a non-library job interview yesterday. It matches my undergraduate degree - computer science. Now I want them to call and offer me the job even though it will take me away from library work.

Financial Aid

I accepted my subsidized student loans and lender today for FSU. I had been holding off thinking that some free money might come from somewhere else. I declined the unsubsidized loans. I only need enough to cover fall, spring, and summer semesters. Tuition, fees, software, hardware, books. Ugh. More debt. But I'm investing in me.

Seems Like a Long Way From Here

On Friday, I needed to add FSU to my resume and a projected completion date. It is December 2008! Seems like such a long way away. Finn, you are so lucky. This time next year you will have already been on interviews and will likely have a job lined up before graduation!
